United weighing striker reinforcements amid squad reshuffle

Manchester United are considering a move for either Ollie Watkins or Benjamin Sesko before the end of the current transfer window. Both forwards are high on the club’s shortlist as they assess the need for added firepower in attack.

Watkins, currently at Aston Villa, and Sesko, who plays for RB Leipzig, are seen as potential targets should the club be able to free up funds. Club officials acknowledge that further incomings are dependent on the departure of players no longer in manager Ruben Amorim’s plans – a process that may stretch closer to the 1 September deadline.

Interest in Sesko and Watkins faces hurdles

United’s pursuit of either forward is unlikely to be straightforward. Leipzig’s Sesko, who netted 13 times across 33 Bundesliga games last term, is also attracting attention from Newcastle. With Alexander Isak’s future uncertain, the Tyneside club are reportedly exploring alternatives and have identified the Slovenian striker as one of interest.

Watkins, on the other hand, remains under contract at Villa Park until 2028. The Midlands side has indicated they are unwilling to sanction his departure. Nonetheless, there is a belief at Old Trafford that this position may soften as the window draws to a close. Even so, Villa’s valuation, reportedly around £60 million, is considered excessive for the 29-year-old.

Hojlund remains main option as exits expected

Amorim continues to select Rasmus Hojlund as his primary option up front, despite the Dane’s modest return of 10 goals in 52 appearances last season. Hojlund showed flashes of his ability in Saturday’s 2-1 friendly win over West Ham in New Jersey, using his pace to fashion a chance that struck the outside of the post.

Although he earned praise for his effort, he has yet to score in two preseason games. A missed opportunity in the first half against the Premier League side visibly frustrated the Portuguese manager.

United have already committed nearly £130 million this summer, bringing in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and young defender Diego Leon. Both Cunha and Mbeumo are capable of leading the line, though Amorim appears to prefer them in supporting roles behind the striker.

Outgoings to determine further activity

With Marcus Rashford completing a switch to Barcelona earlier this month, United still have several players who could depart. Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia were not part of the preseason tour to the United States.

Despite their absence, Amorim has reiterated that none of the sidelined players will be allowed to leave for a reduced fee. He also left open the possibility of reintegrating them into the squad should no deals be reached before the transfer cut-off.
