Poll suggests points deduction for Manchester City following FFP breaches

A poll carried out among followers of the Premier League has suggested that Manchester City be docked points like Everton for their FFP breaches.

The Toffees have lost 10 points ahead of the league resumption as a result of their financial improprieties. The Premier League, English FA and other necessary bodies have been in talks with the Merseyside team for a few seasons now on the issue.

The decision took Everton by surprise, however, as the club believed that there was going to be a different approach to their issue. They also noted that they will be monitoring the other clubs in the same situation while preparing their appeal.

In the meantime, punishments are being decided for the other clubs being investigated for the same issue.

Point deductions, expulsion from the league among other punishments are being pushed as possible punishments for Manchester City especially, who has a record number if breaches totalling 115.

While the poll has suggested points deduction for Man City, others have argued strongly against this. The reasoning is that Everton’s 10-point deduction is unprecedented in the Premier League era and City’s 115 breaches will need to be commensurate, else Everton and other clubs will feel attacked.

Liverpool legend John Aldridge believed that Man City or Chelsea will not face points deduction in any way. “Everton were a sitting duck,” he said. “I don’t know how you gauge it so I guess it all comes down to what happens in future. We’ve all seen what’s gone on with Chelsea under Roman Abramovich or everything at Man City – 115 charges,” Aldridge told the Liverpool ECHO.

“Was it because the other teams have gone on to do well? The others are in the top six? Perhaps it has to do with Everton not having the money to fight it.”

“City have got unlimited amounts, Chelsea have got unlimited amounts, so they’ve scared off the people who are trying to do them for years, delaying and delaying… Everton physically could not do that – I’m sure they would have done too with the same resources.”

Sources have also claimed that Liverpool are leading a push for City to be swiftly dealt with. They are looking for ways to get the league to handle Manchester City by the start of the 2024/25 season.

It remains to be seen what the Premier League will decide as Man City’s case is an especially tricky one.
