Andrey Santos set for Manchester United after clubs reach £50m transfer deal

Manchester United have reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos in a deal worth £50 million. Negotiations accelerated over the past few hours after United stepped up their interest during the weekend, leading to a swift breakthrough between the clubs.

The transfer is structured as an initial £48m payment, with a further £2m linked to achievable bonuses. Chelsea has also secured a 10% sell-on clause as part of the agreement. Santos has now been given permission to undergo a medical before completing the move.

His arrival comes at a crucial stage of United’s summer preparations, with senior players due back for pre-season training on Thursday. The club had identified central midfield as a priority position after Casemiro departed when his contract expired, while Manuel Ugarte suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury that is expected to keep him out for an extended period.

United had explored other options earlier in the window. A move for Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson became unrealistic when the asking price climbed beyond £110m, while Mateus Fernandes instead chose Tottenham after the north London club submitted a guaranteed £85m offer.

United move quickly after missing other targets

With Kobbie Mainoo still representing England at the World Cup, United were facing the prospect of beginning their pre-season campaign against Wrexham in Helsinki on 18 July with Mason Mount as Michael Carrick’s only recognised senior midfielder.

Club officials remained composed after failing to land Fernandes, maintaining confidence that the recruitment team would strengthen the squad as it had done the previous summer. Supporters, however, had become increasingly anxious as the search for reinforcements continued.

Santos was not among the names most frequently linked with the club, with much of the attention focused on Aurelien Tchouameni and several other midfielders. Nevertheless, United viewed the Brazilian as a player who met a number of key requirements.

The 22-year-old already has 28 Premier League appearances to his name, including one during a loan spell at Nottingham Forest. United believe he offers the energy their midfield lacked during Casemiro’s final seasons and see significant room for further development. There was also a feeling that delaying a move could have made him considerably more expensive if he enjoyed another strong campaign elsewhere.

Chelsea accept sale as Santos seeks regular football

Although Chelsea have always rated Santos highly, opportunities in the first team have been limited because of the established partnership of Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo. Remaining as a squad option during a season with Champions League football had previously been viewed as a sensible stage in his development.

In recent weeks, however, people close to the midfielder indicated that he wanted a fresh challenge where he could secure regular playing time. Chelsea were therefore prepared to sanction his departure rather than stand in his way.

The London club is also set to make a substantial profit after signing Santos from Vasco da Gama for £16m in 2023. His exit follows the departures of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid and Tyrique George to Everton, making him Chelsea’s third major sale of the summer.

Some supporters have questioned why Romeo Lavia or Dario Essugo were not moved on instead, but neither player is currently regarded as a realistic departure following seasons interrupted by fitness issues.

More business could still follow for both clubs

Completing deals for Santos and Ederson represents significant progress in addressing United’s midfield shortage. Ederson is also due to undergo a medical before finalising his £35m transfer from Atalanta after Brazil’s World Cup campaign came to an end.

Attention will now turn to whether United add another midfielder before the transfer window closes, with the latest arrivals already easing one of the club’s biggest concerns ahead of the new season.

Chelsea, meanwhile, continue to reshape their squad during a summer without European football, making player sales an important element of their plans. Defender Trevoh Chalobah, who is valued at around £35m, is also expected to leave, with Inter Milan currently leading the race for his signature.
