Edouard Mendy has snubbed a new contract offer from Chelsea, labelling it as disrespectful. The Senegalese goalkeeper wants the same wages as goalkeeping rival Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Chelsea are working round the clock to build a team that would hit the heights in England and Europe. They want to assemble players that are good enough to challenge for the top titles for many years. The Blues are outside the top four in the Premier League but seem to be working with a script.
Things have not gone to script for the Blues, as they have missed a few targets, and Graham Potter has not been elite as Chelsea is struggling to keep up with Arsenal and Manchester City. With the winter transfer window around the corner, there are speculations that Chelsea will bring in new faces.
Meanwhile, the Blues are trying to keep their house in order. Chelsea has offered contract extensions to the players they deem valuable to the club. Senegalese goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is one of the personnel the club wants to keep at Stamford Bridge for a long time, but the shot-stopper is not impressed with the offer from the club and has rejected it.
Mendy rejects a new six-year contract with Chelsea
Edouard Mendy has come from humble beginnings to reach the place he is now. The Senegal goalkeeper was close to quitting the game before receiving a lifeline that turned his life around. Despite his fantastic performances, the goalkeeper is not receiving the respect he deserves.
Chelsea want to keep Mendy at Stamford Bridge for a long time and has offered the goalkeeper a six-year contract. Mendy is not impressed with the offer from the club. He believes the club is showing him plenty of disrespect regarding wages and has rejected the offer from Chelsea. The goalkeeper wants wages that reflect his status as a top player.
The Sun reports that Mendy has a deal that expires in 2025 and has refused to ascent to the Chelsea offer. The sticking point in the Chelsea offer is the wage the club is willing to pay. The Senegal international wants similar wages as Kepa. Kepa arrived at Stamford Bridge from Athletic Bilbao in 2018 for £72m.
Chelsea withdraw the offer to Mendy
Mendy joined the Blues in 2020 from French side Rennes for £22m. After 104 appearances, the goalkeeper feels he has paid his dues and deserves some respect. Mendy, who won FIFA’s best goalkeeper award after guiding Chelsea to a Champions League triumph in 2021, is not ready to accept the offer from Chelsea.
Following the rejection of their offer, Chelsea has now withdrawn it as they try to remain resolute during negotiations. There is a contract stand-off between both parties.
Meanwhile, AC Milan, Nice and Monaco are reportedly keeping an eye on the situation as they seek to cash in if the negotiations between Mendy and Chelsea fail.
Mendy has enjoyed immense success since joining Chelsea. He was of the Senegal side that reached the last 16 at the just concluded FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Mendy also won the African Cup of Nations with the Teranga Lions this year.
Other trophies won by the Senegal goalkeeper include the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.
