Son Heung-Min sustained a bad head injury in the Champions League win over Marseille. The South Korean is still under observation and could miss the Premier League game on Sunday.
The Champions League group stage ends this week, and players can now start turning their attention to the World Cup starting in a few weeks. Tottenham can now focus on domestic affairs after making it through to the knockout round of the Champions League with a win over Marseille.
Antonio Conte was a happy man following the win, but it did not come easy as the north London club laboured to secure a come-from-behind 2-1 win over their French counterparts. Spurs finished top of the table, but the win came at a cost.
With the game between Marseille and Tottenham in its infancy, the north London side was hit with a massive blow. South Korean forward Son Heung-Min, who has been instrumental to the progress made at the club, sustained what looked like a bad head injury.
Son Heung-Min is injured
Tottenham received a massive blow in its quest to progress to the next round of the Champions League. The north London side secured a come-from-behind win over Marseille on Tuesday night but recorded an injury to star forward Son Heung-Min. The South Korean forward had to leave the pitch following the injury.
During the match in France, the Tottenham forward went down after a head collision with Marseille defender Chancel Mbemba. The injury looked bad, and the South Korean international was later spotted walking down the tunnel. He looked dazed and in some discomfort following the collision.
Tottenham successfully booked their place in the next round from a group that includes Marseille, Sporting Lisbon and Eintracht Frankfurt. Son rose to win a header but came off worse after he collided with Mbemba, who seemed to catch him with his shoulder. The blow to the head left Son dazed, and he had to leave the pitch.
Son may be out for a while
Despite the head injury, Heung-min Son still celebrated Spurs’ Champions League progression with his teammates.
Head injuries are unlike other types and treated with increased caution. It is why Son was substituted. The protocols surrounding such injuries had to be taken. It means Son might miss the game against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday. He, however, was able to celebrate with the rest of the squad after the game. Tottenham finished top of their group.
With Antonio Conte banished to the stands due to a red card, his assistant Cristian Stellini took charge of proceedings. The assistant manager did not give any diagnosis to the South Korean. Spurs look to determine if it is concussion-related.
Stellini said Son would go through checks on Wednesday, but the player dealt better in the dressing room after the game. The assistant coach said it was an injury to the face, and his eye is swollen.
Tottenham will be stretched, as they already have a few injuries to key individuals in their attack. Richarlison is on the sidelines, whilst Dejan Kulusevski is also injured.
