Real Madrid claim UEFA Super Cup with victory over Eintracht Frankfurt

Real Madrid beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 to claim their first trophy of the season. Los Blancos tied the record of AC Milan and FC Barcelona after winning the UEFA Super Cup for the fifth time.

The UEFA Super Cup, a match supposed to herald the new season, was played Wednesday night between the Champions League winners Real Madrid and the Europa League champions Eintracht Frankfurt. The game took place in Helsinki, Finland. While it was not the kind of spectacle for the ages, it created exciting moments for the fans.

Both teams fielded their strongest sides as they went all out for the first European trophy of the season. Real Madrid, under a new captain Karim Benzema were looking to set the tone for the new season, while Eintracht Frankfurt came into the game on the back of a 6-1 humiliation at the hands of Bayern Munich.

The Spanish giants made short work of the German team with a 2-0 victory that hands them another trophy.

Real Madrid win again

It was another trophy for the collection by Los Blancos as they ran out 2-0 winners over the Europa League winners in Helsinki on Wednesday night. It was a David and Goliath battle, with the giant gaining victory on this occasion. Real Madrid again showed why they are champions of Europe with a convincing and dominating display.

For massive portions of the game, Los Blancos dominated play and took a deserved lead just before the break. The goal came from the most unlikely source – centre-back David Alaba.

Real Madrid went into the break a goal and their tails up, and besides a couple of chances occasioned by the lapse from Ferland Mendy, never looked in trouble against the Germans. After the break, Real upped their tempo and seized control of the game, forcing Eintracht Frankfurt on the backfoot.

It was not long before the second goal arrived via Ballon d’Or favourite Karim Benzema. The second goal wrapped the game up as a contest as Real Madrid won the title for the fifth time, taking them level with Barcelona and AC Milan for most titles in the competition.

Continuing from last season

It was a tame start from the Champions League winners as Frankfurt defended stoutly and gave the Spanish giants a few scares. The first big chance of the game came to Eintracht Frankfurt. Daichi Kamada, who was clean through on goal and face to face with Thibaut Courtois, fired straight at the big Belgian.

The chance seemed to be shot up the spine for Real Madrid as they took the game to their less fancied opponents. The combination of Vinicius Junior and Karim Benzema came to the fore as the former teed up the Frenchman for the second goal.

Frankfurt played on curtailing the forays of Real Madrid to avoid another humiliation and gave a good account of themselves in the first half and towards the end of the game as they sought a consolation goal.

The many changes by Carlo Ancelotti seemed to affect their rhythm, as it handed Frankfurt the initiative. Real Madrid will now focus on the La Liga that starts this weekend.
