Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is eager to move past the uncertainties of the previous season and focus on what he describes as a “survival of the fittest” for the upcoming campaign. The Dutch manager’s position was solidified following his team’s FA Cup final triumph over Manchester City at Wembley in May, a victory that likely ensured his continued tenure at Old Trafford.
Ten Hag’s Renewed Contract and Confidence
After a thorough review by new co-owners Ineos, the 54-year-old former Ajax boss had his contract extended by triggering a one-year option, securing his role until 2026. Demonstrating his self-assurance, Ten Hag remarked, “if they don’t want me, I will go and win somewhere else” after the FA Cup win. Despite the past uncertainties, he is optimistic and focused on the future, emphasizing the team’s refreshed energy and spirit.
Addressing Last Season’s Challenges
Injuries heavily impacted United last season, especially in defense, with six players sidelined at different times. To tackle this, nearly £90m was invested in French defender Leny Yoro and Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee. Additionally, two highly regarded Arsenal backroom members, Gary O’Driscoll as head of sports medicine and Jordan Reece as head physio, were brought on board.
Ten Hag acknowledged the increased physical demands on players, noting, “Even more than before, this season will be the survival of the fittest.” The new European model, which involves more first-phase games in both the Europa and Champions Leagues, adds to the pressure on the squad. However, he remains proactive in seeking further reinforcements, particularly in the full-back and central defense positions.
Maximizing Player Potential
Ten Hag is also determined to get the best out of his current squad, especially England internationals Marcus Rashford and Mason Mount. Rashford, who netted 30 goals in the 2022-23 season, saw his form dip dramatically to just eight goals last term. Ten Hag expressed confidence in Rashford’s ability to rediscover his scoring touch. As for Mount, who had a limited impact due to injuries after his £55m transfer from Chelsea, Ten Hag is optimistic about his contributions when fully fit.
Enhancements in the Coaching Staff
In a move to bolster his coaching team, Ten Hag welcomed Andreas Georgson, former boss of Lillestrom and Malmo, to United’s backroom staff. Georgson, who has prior experience with Brentford, Arsenal, and Southampton, joins other new hires, including Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake. Ten Hag highlighted the strategic additions aimed at improving individual development, fostering a winning culture, and enhancing set-piece execution.
