West Ham United have secured the services of Senegal international El Hadji Malick Diouf from Czech champions Slavia Prague for a fee of £19 million. The 20-year-old defender has committed to a long-term agreement and is set to link up with the squad during their preseason tour in Germany this week.
The versatile full-back was instrumental during Slavia Prague’s dominant league campaign last season, helping them clinch the title with a 16-point cushion. Diouf made a strong impact, notching seven goals as the team conceded only 18 times across 35 matches.
Having left Senegal in early 2023, Diouf first joined Norwegian outfit Tromso, where he made 21 appearances and found the net three times. He moved to Slavia Prague a year later and made an immediate impression, scoring on his league debut against Karvina.
Player excited to join Premier League side
In his first interview with West Ham’s official website, Diouf shared his delight at completing the move, stating that the decision to join the London side was an easy one despite interest from several clubs.
“It was a good plan for me,” he said. “I’m very happy to be here with the fans. I think we’ll have a strong season.”
Diouf described the move to England as a major milestone. “Everyone wants to play in the Premier League,” he said. “It’s a dream for every footballer.”
Potter pleased with new addition
West Ham manager Graham Potter praised the new signing, calling Diouf a long-term target.
The English coach highlighted the defender’s flexibility on the left flank and his strong mentality. “He’s young, driven, and wants to improve. He’ll be a great fit for the squad,” Potter commented.
Diouf recently broke into the Senegal national team, earning his debut in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Burundi last September. He also featured in the 3-1 victory over England in a friendly in June.
