Sergio Ramos close to retirement as injury woes continue

Sergio Ramos has been a victim of continuous calf injuries since turning 33 in 2020 which has hampered his performances for club and country, eventually leading to an end to his Real Madrid career.

He recently suffered another calf injury at new club Paris Saint-Germain only weeks after recovering from a four-month calf injury that saw him miss most of the club’s early charge back to the top of Ligue 1.

A French sports doctor has now come out to state that the defender may have to call it quits on his illustrious 19-year career as the calf injuries have made his muscles fragile.

Ramos has only managed to make five appearances for the Parisiens since his switch from Real Madrid and has completed 90 minutes on only two occasions. He has also chipped in with a goal, true to his nature as the best goal scoring defender in modern football.

The legendary centre back, who will turn 36 in March, is now expected to miss a reunion with Real Madrid only a season after leaving the Spanish Giants after declaring how much he is looking forward to facing his old side and playing his heart out for his new side to prove a point.

Jean-Marcel Ferret, the doctor in the reports by French newspaper Le Parisien, described Ramos’ problem as ‘old calf syndrome’.

“The injuries are very difficult because you can never predict how they will evolve,” Ferret – who was also the French national team’s former doctor – told Le Parisien.

“It’s all about the configuration of the calf muscle. You have to consider how the muscle has aged given the blows Ramos has taken in his career while playing at the highest level for 19 seasons and how much that has weakened his calves.”

Ramos calves are no longer flexible, claims Dr Ferret

Dr Ferret also went on to claim that the tissues in Ramos’ calves have lost their flexibility and are ever more fragile. He also stated that the rehabilitation work which Ramos carried out to strengthen his legs may have had adverse effects as it strengthened one leg while weakening the other.

Le Parisien also suggested in the report that Ramos’ constant trips abroad could have also contributed to his calves being weakened. PSG will be evaluating their decision to sign the defender, who although is one of the best in the world, now looks like a bad investment due to his fitness issues in the past year.

The French giants signed Ramos in a spectacular window that saw Lionel Messi, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Geroginio Wijnaldum and Achraf Hakimi move to Parc De Princes. These signings were made by the club’s hierarchy with the UEFA Champions League in mind.

Ramos, however, has not been able to feature at all in the Champions League making his signing almost unnecessary as the club are well equipped for the league.

The four-time Champions League winner will be hoping to return to action by the end of February in time for the second leg of the round of 16 tie against Real Madrid.
