Report: Vincent Kompany extends contract with Burnley ahead of Premier League managerial debut

Burnley have tied down Vincent Kompany to a new five-year contract ahead of their return to the Premier League, according to reports.

Kompany was appointed to the role of Burnley manager in the summer of 2022 after some good work with his boyhood club RSC Anderlecht in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League between 2020 and 2022.

The former Manchester City captain had retired from football on the day he was handed the Anderlecht role. Despite that twist, he would lead the club to two consecutive third place finishes, with only a few player errors to blame for finishing in those positions.

Burnley would sign him on a three-year contract starting from the 2022/23 EFL Championship season after letting go of long-term manager Sean Dyche following their relegation to English football’s second tier. His goal was to get the team ready for a  return to the top flight that season but he would perform as well as he did in Anderlecht.

Kompany’s style of football would dominate the English football’s second tier and they would run away with the title,  winning it with games to spare and with an eight points gap, while achieving promotion back to the  league.

Kompany’s debut in England has been hailed as one of the best from rookie managers and the Belgian has been touted as the man who will replace his former boss Pep Guardiola at Manchester City in the coming years.

Tottenham Hotspur were hoping to bring him in ahead of the new season following their managerial struggles in 2022/23. After months of discussions and plotting, the 37-year-old has instead chosen to remain with the Clarets, signing on to remain at the club until 2028, five years from now.

This sees him stay on for three more years after his initial 2025 contract expiration date.

This is in line with Burnley’s new goal of returning to European football like in their heydays with Dyche. Kompany said to the media after the deal was announced: “Burnley and Turf Moor felt right pretty much from the start – so it also feels right to sign for the next five years.

“Together with the fans we have made Turf Moor a fortress again and continue to look forward to the future and the job of making Burnley better with every step.”

Kompany will now have the opportunity to bag 100 points in his debut season as manager when his side hosts Welsh club Cardiff at Turf Moor. They will be presented with the EFL Championship trophy on that day as it will mark the end of the 2022/23 regular season in the second tier.
