Fulham and Nigeria midfielder Alex Iwobi, widely recognized for his accomplishments in the Premier League, is forging a new path in music with the aim of inspiring young people. Since starting his music journey earlier this year, the 28-year-old has released his second single, What’s Luv?, under the name “17.” His debut track, Don’t Shoot, was launched in June and has since garnered close to 60,000 streams on Spotify.
Collaborations and a Message of Positivity
Iwobi’s first single featured collaborations with former Arsenal teammate Chuba Akpom, also known as Skoli, and ex-England youth player Medy Elito, who goes by Don-EE. The track conveyed a powerful message against street violence, while his latest release celebrates his African heritage. Reflecting on his background in a challenging London community, Iwobi hopes his music can inspire young people to pursue their dreams and channel their energy into constructive outlets.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to make a difference,” Iwobi shared. “My music is another way to show young people that they don’t have to conform to a single mold. They should feel empowered to follow their passions.”
Juggling Football and Music
While maintaining a busy schedule with Fulham—starting all nine league games this season under Marco Silva and recently scoring in a 1-1 tie with his former team, Everton—Iwobi sees music as a creative outlet that complements his athletic career. “Music allows me to unwind,” he noted. “It doesn’t take away from my dedication to football. I’m fully committed to improving in my sport, but music is a productive way to spend my free time.”
Iwobi isn’t alone in venturing into the music world. Footballers like Paul Gascoigne, Andy Cole, Glenn Hoddle, and Chris Waddle have also pursued musical projects, with several even breaking into the UK charts. From Petr Cech’s drumming skills to Dion Dublin’s invention of a new instrument called the Dube, football has long shared a connection with music.
