Steven Gerrard advises Harry Kane on Spurs’ future

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has advised Harry Kane to make a decision on his club future as his contract with Tottenham Hotspur draws to an end.

Kane, 29, is a youth product of the North London side. After spending a few years outside the club on loan, he finally made his debut for the club in 2015. Since then, he has gone on to break multiple records in the club’s history while amassing some individual accolades of his own. Unfortunately, those efforts of his have not been consolidated by the club, who have failed to win anything of note in the time that Kane has spent at the club.

Several calls have been made to the striker to leave the club and seek trophies elsewhere, as his talents are worth more than the scraps he gets at the North London club. However, the club under the leadership of Daniel Levy have fought successfully to keep Kane at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium for years.

There is another fight on the horizon as Kane is set to be out of his latest contract in 2024. Interested clubs are reportedly preparing to snap him up at the end of the ongoing season but Spurs are determined not to lose Kane. They are also preparing a new contract for him as Levy considers him untouchable.

Gerrard, who faced a similar situation in his playing days at Liverpool, empathised with Kane and mentioned that the England striker is the one who holds all the cards. The former Aston Villa manager said this while on commentary duty for the UEFA Euro Championship qualifiers involving England and Ukraine, where Kane scored his 55th International goal to increase his lead over Wayne Rooney as the Three Lions all-time top goalscorer.

“I don’t want to open a can of worms but he’s got a big decision to make, career-wise,” Gerrard said on Channel 4’s coverage of the England-Ukraine match on Sunday.

“I’ve been there myself, thinking, ‘is my team good enough to get me the medals?’ Am I going to get out of my career what I want to get?’

“It was different for me because I grew up as a Liverpool fan, from the city, all my family were Liverpool. I knew that one trophy with Liverpool would have meant a lot more to me than being anywhere else.

“But he’s not from Tottenham, not been through Tottenham all the time, he’s got a big decision to make.

“I can’t give him any advice on that, but I bet every single day of his life moving forwards it’s going to be on his mind.”

Kane’s decision could be influenced by the fact that he will be returning to Spurs to find that Antonio Conte has left the club.

The striker was a big fan of the Italian and believed that he would lead them to titles in the coming seasons. However, he will most likely be under the watch of Ryan Mason for the rest of the season while Levy looks for another manager, their third in five seasons.
