Former Inter Milan goalkeeper Gianluca Pagliuca has voiced his support for Gianluigi Donnarumma, praising the Paris Saint-Germain star as a reliable choice for Italy at the upcoming European Championship. The 25-year-old will lead the Azzurri in Germany, retaining his position after an impressive season in France.
Donnarumma’s Performance and Leadership
Pagliuca highlighted Donnarumma’s successful 2023-24 campaign, during which he secured Ligue 1 and the French Cup titles. “He had a wonderful season. He was always important and decisive,” Pagliuca remarked, emphasizing Donnarumma’s consistent performances in the Champions League as well. According to Pagliuca, Donnarumma’s grounded personality and extensive experience make him well-suited to be Italy’s captain. “He has the right personality to be a captain,” he added.
Criticism and Growth Under Luis Enrique
Despite his accomplishments, Donnarumma faces criticism from some Italian fans and media, particularly regarding his ball-handling skills. Pagliuca attributed part of this scrutiny to unresolved feelings among AC Milan supporters about Donnarumma’s departure. He noted that under the guidance of Luis Enrique, Donnarumma has solidified his status at PSG, unlike his fluctuating role under Mauricio Pochettino. “Many in Italy haven’t forgiven him for the choice he made, especially Milan fans,” Pagliuca explained, defending the goalkeeper’s consistent performance despite external pressures.
Italy’s Goalkeeping Depth
Pagliuca also discussed the promising talents backing up Donnarumma, notably Guglielmo Vicario, who had a commendable debut season in the Premier League. While praising Vicario’s progress, Pagliuca was clear that he sees Donnarumma as the undisputed number one for Italy. Additionally, he weighed in on the competition between Alex Meret and Ivan Provedel for the third goalkeeping spot, predicting that Meret would likely be chosen due to his history with coach Luciano Spalletti.
Italy’s Prospects at Euro 2024
Reflecting on Italy’s goalkeeping tradition, Pagliuca expressed confidence in the current generation. “We are in good hands,” he stated, noting the emergence of several talented young keepers. Regarding Italy’s chances at Euro 2024, Pagliuca conveyed optimism, citing Spalletti’s enthusiasm and leadership as key factors. He believes Italy has the potential to reach at least the semi-finals in the tournament.
