Newcastle United have initiated discussions with Southampton over a potential transfer for goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. The Tyneside club is considering both a loan and a full transfer as options for bringing in the England international.
Southampton, recently relegated from the Premier League, are understood to favor a full sale. The Championship side secured Ramsdale from Arsenal for an upfront fee of £18 million in August 2024 and would prefer a significant return on their investment.
Search for competition behind Pope
The Magpies’ interest in Ramsdale follows their failed pursuit of James Trafford. A £27 million agreement was reached with Burnley last week, but Manchester City exercised their right to match the offer, paving the way for Trafford’s return to his former club.
Newcastle are looking to add depth in goal and provide added competition for current number one Nick Pope. A move for Ramsdale would also reunite him with Eddie Howe, who previously managed him at Bournemouth.
Player eager to remain in top flight
Ramsdale made 30 Premier League appearances last season despite Southampton’s struggles. The team ended the campaign in last place, managing only 12 points across the season.
A switch to St James’ Park would allow Ramsdale to continue playing at the highest domestic level and possibly boost his chances of regaining a place in the England squad, having last been called up in March.
Newcastle are preparing for Champions League football in the upcoming season and are actively adjusting their roster. The future of striker Alexander Isak remains unclear, with Liverpool reportedly showing interest, while RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko is being considered as a possible replacement.
