Kylian Mbappe is anticipated to miss all of Real Madrid’s pre-season activities but disclosed his expected debut date during his unveiling at the Bernabeu this week.
Mbappe’s extended contract with Madrid was announced in early June, but his arrival was delayed due to his participation in Euro 2024 with the French national team. Additionally, there were concerns about the possibility of him needing further surgery on his nose, which he broke during the tournament.
Rest and preparation for the season ahead
For now, Mbappe will take a holiday to recover after the demanding 2023/24 season before beginning his journey with Madrid. Speaking to reporters at the Bernabeu, he said, “I am in touch with the doctors, and they will inform me when I should return from my break. We have already coordinated with [fitness coach Antonio] Pintus to create a pre-season regimen. It’s going to be a long season, so special preparation is necessary.”
“I discussed with the doctors, and we will decide our next steps. I am likely to play in the [UEFA] Super Cup, but it will depend on the coach’s decision. I will work hard to be ready,” Mbappe added.
UEFA Super Cup and future prospects
As the reigning Champions League winners, Madrid will face Europa League champions Atalanta in the UEFA Super Cup at Poland’s National Stadium in Warsaw on 14 August. Madrid, who last won the Super Cup in 2022, have the opportunity to surpass Barcelona as the most successful club in the competition’s history, with both clubs currently tied at five wins each. Madrid has secured four of those victories in the last ten years.
If Mbappe debuts in the Super Cup, he will do so wearing the number nine shirt for this season. However, this is expected to be temporary, as he is likely to switch to the number ten jersey next summer when the newly appointed captain Luka Modric departs.
