Manchester United goalkeeper Onana picks up injury during international break

In the news is the fitness mishap suffered by Cameroonian goalkeeper, André Onana, of Manchester United.

The 27-year-old former Barcelona La Masia academy player was on international duty with his home country when he was ruled out for their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying game against Libya.

The decision came after tests were carried out on Onana, who had to be substituted in the 81st minute of the Indomitable Lions’ 3-0 home victory against Mauritius last Friday.

Onana, who has just hit good form after a mixed start to life at Old Trafford, now faces a race to be fit ahead of Manchester United’s meeting with Everton at Goodison Park when the Premier League resumes at the weekend.

Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayındır, who joined the club in the summer like Onana, will be looking forward to an opportunity. The former Fenerbahçe man is yet to start for the Red Devils this season.

Onana has returned to Manchester to begin his recovery but initial tests suggests that he has sustained an injury to one of the bones in his pelvis. The initial sensations are good, however, giving fans hope that Erik ten Hag’s injury list will not grow by one addition.

More tests will follow and the extent of Onana’s injury will be revealed. Bayındır will be on the look out for what could be good news for him.

Meanwhile, the United fanbase are also heaving a sigh of relief following Marcus Rashford’s return to training.

Like Onana, the 26-year-old forward has not had the best start to the 2023/24 season at Old Trafford. However, he is one of ten Hag’s most trusted players and one whose position cannot be expertly filled on the pitch just yet.

He had an injury scare while playing for England against Malta in the international break and had to be substituted when he started showing signs of discomfort. Gareth Southgate played down the rumours of a big injury at the time and now, the Three Lions’ official social media accounts have confirmed to the general public that Rashford is fine.

He is now back in training and in line to make an appearance for England against North Macedonia.

Manchester United fans will also be worried about the fitness of Christian Eriksen and Rasmus Højlund, who both picked up injuries just before the international break. The Red Devils faced Luton Town and both Danes went down at different time and missed the international break as a result.

Both players, however, were supposed to return to the squad ahead of the Everton game but there has been no update yet. United is depleted and fans will be worried that their slow and steady rise could face another setback due to injuries in the coming weeks.
