Luis de la Fuente confident in Spain’s squad ahead of Austria clash

Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has expressed confidence in his squad before the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 meeting with Austria, highlighting the influence of several key players, including Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, and Pedri.

Discussing the relationship between Yamal and Olmo, De la Fuente explained that teammates from the same club naturally understand each other better on the pitch. He acknowledged that international football offers little time to build chemistry but believes players of their quality are capable of overcoming that limitation through their talent.

According to the Spain coach, the real challenge at national-team level is bringing together footballers from different clubs and creating a balanced unit. He described that ability to combine individual strengths as one of Spain’s greatest advantages.

Confidence within the camp remains high

De la Fuente also reacted positively to recent comments made by Lamine Yamal about Spain’s ambitions in the tournament. Rather than seeing the youngster’s confidence as excessive, the coach viewed it as a reflection of the belief shared throughout the squad.

He said the teenager has complete faith in both his own abilities and those of his teammates, adding that everyone inside the camp understands the level of quality the team possesses. For the Spain boss, such optimism is an encouraging sign ahead of the knockout stages.

Midfield depth gives Spain plenty of options

Spain’s midfield has again been one of the team’s strongest areas during the World Cup, with Pedri and Rodri playing significant roles. Even so, De la Fuente emphasised that the competition for places extends beyond those two players.

He praised the progress shown by his midfielders, saying they continue to grow in confidence with every match. He also pointed to Fabián and Zubimendi as further examples of the quality available, stressing that every selection offers a dependable solution because all of his midfielders are performing at a high level.

Yamal’s condition being managed carefully

Another major topic before the Austria encounter has been Lamine Yamal’s physical condition and whether he is prepared to feature from the opening whistle after having his minutes managed during the tournament.

De la Fuente revealed that the coaching staff have deliberately handled the teenager with caution, just as they would any player recovering from injury. At the same time, he made it clear that Yamal is fit enough to play for however long the match demands.

Despite confirming that the winger is in good shape, the Spain coach stopped short of guaranteeing his involvement, saying a decision on whether he plays will be made later.
