The United States secured their place in the World Cup round of 16 with a 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, although the success came at a cost. Despite seeing less of the ball and producing fewer attempts on goal than their opponents, Mauricio Pochettino’s side remained composed throughout and ultimately achieved the result that mattered most.
Folarin Balogun looked to have opened the scoring after half an hour with an excellent finish following clever movement to beat his marker. However, the celebrations were short-lived as the effort was disallowed for offside.
The striker did not have to wait long for another opportunity. Moments before the interval, he reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the penalty area and calmly guided a left-footed finish into the net to hand the Americans a deserved advantage.
Balogun continued to threaten before halftime, coming close to adding another goal when his close-range attempt struck the crossbar deep into stoppage time.
A red card changes the outlook
The match took a dramatic turn after the break when Balogun was dismissed following a VAR review. His studs made contact with the ankle of Tarik Muharemovic, prompting the referee to produce a red card.
There appeared to be no deliberate attempt to injure the Bosnian defender, with the contact occurring as Balogun came down, but the decision stood, and the forward now faces a suspension.
His absence will present a major challenge for the United States as they prepare for a round of 16 meeting with Belgium. Given the impact he had made before leaving the pitch, replacing his attacking contribution will not be straightforward.
Tillman seals progression as Belgium await
Even after going down to ten men, the United States still found another goal. Christian Pulisic thought he had doubled the lead, but his finish was ruled out for offside.
The second goal eventually arrived through Malik Tillman, whose free kick extended the advantage and ensured a comfortable finish for the hosts.
Attention now turns to Belgium, although there is reason for optimism. Their upcoming opponents needed to recover from a two-goal deficit before edging Senegal with a penalty deep into extra time, suggesting they are far from unbeatable despite entering the contest as favourites.
The Americans have not progressed beyond the round of 16 since 2002, and they will hope this campaign can finally produce a deeper run, even if they must attempt it without their leading scorer.
Dzeko’s injury clouds Bosnia’s future
For Bosnia and Herzegovina, the tournament ended with disappointment, and the injury to Edin Dzeko added further frustration. The veteran striker was unavailable, raising the possibility that his World Cup career has reached its conclusion.
At 40 years old, Dzeko overcame considerable obstacles to appear at a second World Cup and could now leave the international stage as Bosnia’s record appearance holder and all-time leading scorer.
Whether Bosnia can return to the tournament in the future without their long-serving captain remains uncertain, but for now the focus belongs to the United States, whose ambitions will next be tested against Belgium.
