Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp has emphatically stated that the club will go all out in the January transfer window to reinforce the squad as they look to make their way back into the Premier League top four.
In what has been a really weird season for Klopp and Liverpool fans, the Reds currently sit in sixth place. They have spent some time outside the top 10 this season and have also been outside the European places as well (including the UEFA European Conference League).
Their first season without Sadio Mane, who left for Bayern Munich in the summer has not turned out as expected, with his replacements Darwin Nuñez and Luis Diaz not providing enough support for star man Mohamed Salah to keep banging in the goals.
Salah, on the other hand, has been very poor in front of goal this season by his otherworldly standards. His six goals are a very poor return and this dearth of goals have contributed to the club’s struggles this season.
The Reds have also struggled with injuries this season, with Diaz and Diogo Jota spending long spells on the sidelines. Klopp is well aware of all the struggles within the team and has assured fans that the club will spend as much as they can to fix them when the January transfer window rolls round.
Speaking in his press conference on Friday, Klopp said: “I’m not against investment but we will see what the future brings, nobody knows at the moment. I’m still convinced the future will be good.
“We have to solve the present and that’s what we are working on.
“January in our situation is a window from a sports side we are always prepared, it’s always clear what kind of ideas we have or how the necessity is from our point of view.
“All the rest doesn’t lie 100 per cent in our hands and we always work with what we’ve got, and that will not change.”
England midfielder Jude Bellingham is one of Liverpool’s reported targets but with the 19-year-old’s comments earlier in the season about remaining in the German Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund for his development, it may be a tough ask to get him to join them in January or in the summer.
They will also face competition from Real Madrid who have locked in on Bellingham as a replacement for Toni Kroos in their all new midfield trio.
Liverpool, however, could be able to present a viable financial offer to Bellingham, who wants to play in the Premier League as an Englishman. This is because the club is in the process of being sold to new owners.
One of the conditions for the sale is similar to that which Chelsea demanded during their time: adequate investment in the squad and facilities. If they are able to finalise on new owners before Bellingham makes his decision to leave Dortmund, they could present him with a good offer which Madrid would have to work hard to top.
Liverpool fans can be optimistic about the club’s chances however, as they are slowly building momentum for the rest of the season.
Their Carabao Cup game against Manchester City proved it, even though they lost by a hair’s breadth.
