Liverpool jump to front of line for Dani Olmo signature following Euros outing

Dani Olmo has captured the attention of many big clubs around Europe thanks to his outstanding performances for the Spain national football team at the 2024 UEFA European Championships.

He scored three goals for La Roja on their way to the final and has been their highest-rated performer so far after fellow Barcelona trainee Lamine Yamal. The 26-year-old ended up as the joint winner of the Golden Boot from the tournament.

The Barcelona-trained attacking midfielder whose versatility allows him to be able to play on the wings has been with Red Bull Leipzig since January 2020 and has been attracting interest since then. However, Leipzig have been able to hold on to the man despite tempting offers to let him go. All that could change this summer.

Reports have it that Liverpool are positioning themselves to snap up the former Dinamo Zagreb man after the Euros. Olmo signed for four years with Leipzig initially, then extended his stay at the German club in the summer of 2023, when that contract ran out. The terms of the contract see him tied to the German Bundesliga outfit until 2027 unless any interested parties pay £50 million to the German club to buy him out of the contract by Saturday 20 July 2024. After that, Leipzig will hold the cards which means they can choose not to sell him until the end of his contract or to demand a much higher fee for him.

Manchester City and Manchester United were also linked with the player. Many outlets were even positioning him as Kevin De Bruyne’s replacement at City thansk to the rumours of the Belgian midfielder’s potential exit after almost a decade at the Etihad. The same amount is what City are expecting to receive for De Bruyne, who is being courted by clubs from the Saudi Pro League. That money would be reinvested in Olmo, but now, they face competition from Liverpool for the Spaniard’s signature.

Some outlets also claim that City have rued themselves out of the race for Olmo, which effectively places Liverpool in pole position to pay the man’s release clause.

Arne Slot is yet to make any signings for the club and pre-seaspn preparations have begun for the league seaosn which is only a month away. Olmo would be a great signing for the club and one that could earn Slot cookie points among the fans. However, he would be a troublesome one.

This is because his favoured positions are currently filled by Luis Diaz and Dominik Szoboszlai. There would be no place for the Spaniard in the squad and this is not what a new manager would want to deal with.

However, Slot’s hand is yet to be revealed, which means fans can still be excited about the manager’s plans for the club as they transition out of the Jürgen Klopp era.
