Lionel Messi opens up about frustrating PSG stint

Lionel Messi, widely regarded as one of football’s all-time greats, has shared less-than-positive memories of his time in Paris. The 37-year-old Argentine superstar, who moved to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) from Barcelona, had high hopes of helping the French club achieve European success. However, after just two seasons, Messi left PSG, falling short of the club’s most coveted goal – winning the UEFA Champions League.

Despite the disappointment, Messi’s tenure in Paris wasn’t entirely without success. He claimed two Ligue 1 titles and the Trophée des Champions during his time at the Parc des Princes. Yet, the Argentine forward’s overall experience left him with a bitter taste, as he expressed in a candid conversation with Brecht Dejaegere, a Belgian midfielder currently playing for Kortrijk.

Messi’s take on his time at PSG

In a post-match chat with Dejaegere after Inter Miami’s game against Charlotte FC, Messi didn’t hold back when asked about his stint in Paris. Summing up his time at PSG in one word, Messi called it “la mierda,” a Spanish phrase meaning “s**t” in English. This blunt assessment underscores the frustration and negativity that surrounded Messi during his two seasons with the Parisian club.

Dejaegere, who had previously faced Messi while playing for Toulouse in Ligue 1, said the Argentine icon struggled with the constant criticism and negative reception from PSG supporters. Even with a star-studded squad that included the likes of Neymar and Kylian Mbappé, PSG failed to make it past the Round of 16 in the Champions League during Messi’s time there. This, combined with the boos and jeers from fans, left Messi disillusioned with his time in the French capital.

A new chapter in MLS

Since moving to Inter Miami in July 2023, Messi has experienced a much more positive environment. Reflecting on his time in Paris, Messi admitted that leaving Barcelona for PSG was not part of his plan and described the move as a sudden decision. He compared his current situation in Major League Soccer to his time in Paris, stating that his experience with Miami has been the complete opposite.

Despite not delivering PSG’s long-awaited Champions League success, Messi had strong individual performances during his two seasons. In his final year at PSG, he racked up 21 goals and 20 assists. His departure from Paris to MLS came as a free transfer, marking a new chapter in his illustrious career. Messi had already achieved great success in Europe, with four Champions League titles and six top-scorer honors in the competition to his name from his time at Barcelona.

The move to Miami seems to have rejuvenated Messi, as he now leads the MLS side, who recently clinched the Supporters’ Shield for the best regular-season record. This new chapter in his career provides a fresh environment, one that seems to be more aligned with Messi’s current aspirations.
