Leicester City open talks with James Maddison over contract extension

Leicester City have opened talks with James Maddison over a contract extension at the club. The Foxes have rejected two bids from Newcastle United for the midfielder.

Leicester City has come under plenty of barrages this summer as several clubs look to prise their players away from them.  Brendan Rodgers faces an arduous task to keep his players as the quality they boast is attractive to many clubs, especially in the Premier League.

Kasper Schmeichel is one of the players Leicester lost this season as he joined French Ligue 1 side Nice, while Wesley Fofana is the subject of interest from Chelsea.

The Foxes have managed just one point from their first two Premier League games, and the chase for some of the Leicester City players is a distraction they don’t need.

Leicester City have lost a few players in the last couple of years and remains resolute in maintaining what they have. With eyes on James Maddison, the Foxes have moved quickly to tie the Englishman to a lengthier and more lucrative contract.

Leicester City in talks with Maddison over a contract extension

James Maddison has been the target of several Premier League teams in the past couple of years, but Leicester City have managed to keep the midfielder within its ranks. Recently, the Foxes opened talks with James Maddison over a new contract as the midfielder enters the final two years of his current deal.

Sportsmail reported last month that the Foxes had no intention of selling the midfielder, and the club have moved quickly to strengthen their position by offering the midfielder a new deal. Maddison was the subject of two bids from Newcastle this summer, but the Foxes want him to commit to the club long-term.

The last contract renewal by the 25-year-old was in August 2020, and the deal was worth about £100,000 weekly. It brought him closer to the top earners at the club – Jamie Vardy and Kasper Schmeichel – with the latter now out of the club.

A realignment at the King Power stadium

Leicester City hope to settle their squad for the season. Wesley Fofana is another target for Chelsea, while James Maddison has been in the news over a move away from the King Power stadium.

Brendan Rodgers faced questions over discussions on Maddison’s future, and the Scotsman was affirmative in his reply. Brendan Rodgers believes there have been discussions between the club and player’s agents. He said Jon Rudkin [director of football] has spoken with them several times.

Despite the pressure on some Leicester City players, they remain keen to stay at the club. Discussions are on with James Maddison and James Vardy, who is in the final year of his contract and is close to signing a new deal in the coming weeks.

Rodgers remains confident the club can reach a deal with the player over an extension to his contract. The Englishman has two years left on his contract, and Rodgers affirmed that the club wants to protect its asset.

Last season was productive for Maddison as he scored 18 goals and 12 assists. The midfielder already has a goal and an assist from two Premier League games this season.
