Mbappé closes on record as France overpower Iraq

France strengthened their position at the top of Group I with a comfortable victory over Iraq in a match heavily affected by severe weather in Philadelphia. Kylian Mbappe struck twice as Didier Deschamps’ side secured their second win of the tournament and moved closer to the knockout phase.

The encounter became the first game at this World Cup to be disrupted by adverse weather conditions. Lightning in the area forced a delay of more than two hours between the end of the first half and the start of the second, although the match itself had begun as scheduled despite heavy rain earlier in the day.

Mbappe’s brace took his World Cup total to 16 goals in 16 appearances, leaving him level in second place on the competition’s all-time scoring chart and only two goals behind the leading mark that had been extended earlier the same day.

France take control despite long interruption

The French side started brightly and converted their early superiority into a lead after 14 minutes. Mbappe received the ball near the edge of the area and guided a left-footed effort beyond the goalkeeper and into the far corner.

After the opening goal, the match settled into a different rhythm. Following the first-half cooling break, France found it more difficult to create clear openings, while Iraq enjoyed longer periods of possession despite losing captain and striker Aymen Hussein through injury.

The lengthy weather stoppage appeared to benefit Les Bleus. Shortly after play resumed, Iraq handed their opponents a major opportunity when goalkeeper Ahmed Basil failed to deal with a short goal kick from defender Zaid Tahseen. Ousmane Dembele reacted quickly and squared the ball for Mbappe, who finished from close range to double the advantage.

Dembele and Olise make the difference

France continued to threaten after establishing a two-goal cushion. Adrien Rabiot was unable to convert a clear-headed opportunity, while Michael Olise came close to scoring himself when an inventive chipped effort struck the crossbar.

The third goal eventually arrived through Dembele, who fired into the bottom corner after being found by an outstanding outside-of-the-foot pass from Olise. It was Dembele’s first goal for France at a major international tournament and came in his 20th appearance in such competitions.

Olise’s contribution once again underlined his growing influence within the national team. His two assists in Philadelphia increased his total direct goal involvements to six across his last three appearances for France.

Iraq unable to mount a comeback

Although Iraq created opportunities during the closing stages, they were unable to find a route back into the contest. Rebin Sulaka volleyed over the crossbar from a corner delivered by Zidane Iqbal, while Ali Al Hamadi narrowly failed to connect with a dangerous cross from Marko Farji.

France remained largely in control throughout the evening and continued to press aggressively without possession, forcing several turnovers in advanced positions. Their organization and intensity prevented Iraq from building sustained pressure despite occasional promising moments.

Mbappé nearly completed a hat trick late in the match after breaking clear of the defence, but his final attempt flew high and wide of the target. Even so, his two goals helped seal another convincing success for a team seeking a place in a third consecutive World Cup final.

With six points from two matches, France sit alone at the summit of Group I. Iraq remain without a point and face a difficult challenge in their final group fixture.

Final group fixtures await

France will conclude their group-stage campaign against Norway in Foxborough on Friday, while Iraq is scheduled to meet Senegal at the same time in Toronto.

The final round of matches will determine the remaining positions in Group I, but France have already strengthened their credentials with another composed and effective display under challenging conditions.
