Koundé confirms fresh agreement upon return

Barcelona’s preseason journey has taken the team to South Korea, but key contract business awaits them back in Spain. Once the squad returns to Catalonia, defender Jules Koundé is expected to formalize a new five-year commitment with the club.

The news of an agreement between Koundé and Barcelona emerged recently, and the player has now publicly acknowledged the development. “Yes, I think it’s a matter of days,” he stated when asked about the deal. He added that once back in Barcelona, the process would be finalized, expressing satisfaction with how quickly talks progressed.

Koundé emphasized the shared vision between himself and the club, highlighting how both parties were aligned in wanting him to remain. He described his happiness with the squad environment and pride in competing for major honors each season. The French defender made it clear that he never considered moving elsewhere.

Key role under Flick secured extension

In recent weeks, there had been speculation of interest from Manchester City, who reportedly made an informal inquiry through Koundé’s representatives. Despite that, the defender is set to stay at Barcelona, solidifying his role in Hansi Flick’s plans.

Initially adjusting to life at the club with a positional shift from center back to right back, Koundé overcame early challenges. During the 2024–25 campaign, he became a fixture in the lineup and formed an effective duo with Lamine Yamal down the right side.

Koundé featured in 50 matches before a hamstring issue ruled him out of the final stretch of the season. His absence was notable, especially during Barcelona’s Champions League elimination, where his defensive contributions were sorely missed.

Barcelona’s renewal push continues

Koundé’s extension adds him to a growing list of players who have recommitted to Barcelona ahead of the new season. Others to put pen to paper include Iñigo Martínez, Raphinha, Wojciech Szczęsny, and Yamal.

Attention may soon turn to further negotiations, with Frenkie de Jong and Eric García expected to be among the next in line for new terms. The club’s efforts reflect a continued push to maintain stability and retain key members of the squad heading into the next campaign.
