Kimmich shines as Germany rallies to take control against Italy

Germany began their Nations League quarter-final clash against Italy on the front foot, dictating possession and pressing high up the pitch. However, despite their early dominance, Julian Nagelsmann’s side found themselves trailing within the opening ten minutes. Nicolo Barella initiated a swift attacking move by threading a precise pass down the right flank to Matteo Politano. The winger’s cutback into the area appeared to be destined for Moise Kean, but a last-ditch deflection from Jonathan Tah inadvertently set up Sandro Tonali, who clinically finished past Oliver Baumann to give Italy the lead.

The home side grew in confidence after their opener and continued to carve out dangerous opportunities. Tonali remained a constant threat, forcing Baumann into action with a well-placed effort from distance. Moments later, Kean came close to doubling the advantage with a sharp volley at the near post, but the German goalkeeper reacted swiftly to deny him.

Kimmich’s influence sparks Germany’s comeback

Despite trailing, Germany maintained control of possession but lacked a cutting edge in the final third. Recognizing the need for fresh ideas, Nagelsmann introduced Tim Kleindienst and Nico Schlotterbeck at the start of the second half. The tactical switch yielded immediate results, as Kleindienst made an instant impact. With his very first touch, the Borussia Mönchengladbach forward rose highest to meet a precise cross from Joshua Kimmich, nodding the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma to bring Germany level.

The momentum shifted dramatically as the match turned into a fiercely contested battle. Italy responded with urgency, testing Baumann twice in quick succession. Both Kean and Giacomo Raspadori found themselves in promising positions, but the Hoffenheim shot-stopper was equal to the challenge, keeping the visitors on level terms.

Goretzka secures the victory

Germany made the most of their set-piece prowess to take the lead, with Kimmich once again playing a pivotal role. His expertly delivered corner found Leon Goretzka, whose glancing header left Donnarumma rooted to the spot. The Bayern Munich midfielder’s goal proved to be the decisive moment of the encounter, handing Germany the advantage heading into the second leg.

Kimmich’s performance at the San Siro was nothing short of exceptional, as the Bayern star dictated play and provided both assists that turned the game in Germany’s favor. His deliveries from open play and set-pieces proved to be the difference, punishing Italy’s defensive lapses. Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Alessandro Bastoni were left exposed on both goals, failing to track their markers at crucial moments.

With a narrow lead secured, Germany will look to finish the job at Signal Iduna Park, while Italy faces an uphill task. Luciano Spalletti’s men will need a flawless defensive display in the return fixture if they are to keep their Nations League hopes alive.
