Following the loss to Tottenham, Jamie Carragher believes that Manchester City is not getting the best out of Erling Haaland. The striker is the top scorer in the Premier League, but Carragher believes he chose the wrong club.
Erling Haaland hit the Premier League with a bang, beating and setting new records. The Norwegian has shwon he is a phenomenon, and with 25 Premier League goals this season, he is on course to rewrite the goal scoring record of the Premier League. Despite the phenomenal form Haaland has been in this season, things seem to have tapered out for him.
Since his return from injury, Haaland has slowed down, with the former Dortmund striker struggling to replicate his early season form. Haaland is aware several clubs admire his talent and would love to have him, but not on his current showing. The former Dortmund striker has to up his game and return to the form that made him the doyen of everyone.
Against Tottenham on Sunday, the Norwegian fired blanks, with Harry Kane stealing the show. The England international scored the only goal of the game. The performance by Haaland has left people wondering if his talents are best suited for Manchester City. On top of the list of people who believe he is not at the right club is Jamie Carragher.
Carragher declares the unsuitability of Haaland to Man City
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has made a bold claim concerning Erling Haaland and Man City. The TV pundit believes that the Norwegian bomber made the wrong choice in Man City. Haaland started his Man City career in electric form, but Carragher believes Pep has not gotten the best out of him.
Carragher said the style of play at City cannot bring out the best of prolific forward.
On Sunday afternoon, Haaland endured a frustrating afternoon, as he was more of a passenger in the high-profile tie against Tottenham. The north London side won the game 1-0, with Kane scoring the only goal.
Carragher asserted that with Haaland, City is less of what it should be, as they are not as good a side. Carragher added that the former RB Salzburg striker cannot show off his best qualities under Guardiola, despite his mammoth goal tally. He posited that we’re only seeing 60 per cent of Erling Haaland.
What Carragher sees in Haaland
The former Liverpool defender told Sky Sports that Haaland has come from a league that is a sharp contrast from the Premier League. He said Haaland came in from Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund, who are accustomed to playing counter-attacking football. According to Carragher, at Dortmund, his blistering pace is evident as the game swings from end to end.
The style at Man City cages him, so he can’t play at his best. He posits that he chose the wrong club to get the best out of him. Carragher also believes that while Haaland has scored 25 league goals, Manchester City, as a team, have scored the same number of goals but has conceded more and are far easier to counter-attack.
Manchester City will not play end-to-end football because that is not Pep Guardiola’s style; instead, they will build up slowly, push the opposition back to the edge of the box, and play from there.
The defeat to Spurs leaves City five points behind Arsenal at the top of the table.
