Rasmus Højlund came off the bench to score the decisive goal in Denmark’s Nations League quarter-final first leg against Portugal. The Manchester United striker capitalized on Andreas Skov Olsen’s precise cross in the 78th minute, calmly finishing past the goalkeeper to seal an important win for his side.
After finding the net, Højlund celebrated by replicating Cristiano Ronaldo’s well-known ‘Siu’ gesture. However, he was quick to clarify that the celebration was not meant as a taunt.
Inspired by his football hero
Speaking to Danish broadcaster TV2, Højlund emphasized that his actions were a tribute rather than an insult. “It wasn’t meant to mock him in any way,” he explained. “I’ve always said that Ronaldo has been a huge influence on me and my football journey.”
The 21-year-old forward recalled watching his idol in action as a child. “I saw him play in 2009 when he scored from a free-kick, and I’ve been a fan ever since,” he added. Højlund expressed his delight at scoring against a player he considers the best in the world, describing the moment as unforgettable.
Portugal struggles as Denmark takes control
Despite Ronaldo playing the full 90 minutes for Portugal, the visiting side struggled to create clear opportunities. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner had a quiet game, with his most notable effort being a wayward header that failed to trouble the Danish defense.
Denmark, led by newly appointed coach Brian Riemer, looked the more dangerous team throughout the match. Christian Eriksen had an early chance to give his side the lead from the penalty spot, but Portugal’s goalkeeper, Diogo Costa, made an impressive save, diving to his right to keep out the effort.
Portugal’s defense was tested multiple times, with Eriksen also seeing a shot cleared off the line by club teammate Diogo Dalot and another attempt from a free-kick. The loser of the tie will move into Scotland’s World Cup qualifying group, which also includes Greece and Belarus.
