Graham Potter could return to the Premier League with Leicester City in the 2024/25 season according to reports.
Potter has been out of a job since being fired by Chelsea in the 2022/23 season but his stocks remain high in English football.
Once touted as a candidate to take over from Pep Guardiola at Manchester City as well as a potential England Three Lions, Arsenal and Manchester United manager, the 49-year-old was unable to find a club for the 2023/24 season. However, he is set to take over the role that his successor at Chelsea left vacant as the Foxes prepare to regain their Premier League credibility.
Leicester reportedly held talks with ex-United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær as well as former Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper and West Bromwich Albion’s Carlos Corberan in their bid to replace Maresca. However, The Sun reports that they settled on Potter, whose football at Brighton and Hove Albion is still being referenced.
One of the reasons he is highly rated is Maurico Pochettino. The former Paris Saint-Germain boss struggled at Chelsea but made sure to help Chelsea finish in a better place than the season before. This led to many opining that the club structure held Potter back from playing his best football at Stamford Bridge.
Reports suggest that the appointment is all but done but many are wondering how Potter will manage with the financial difficulties that the Foxes are currently facing. They are on the verge of resuming the 2024/25 Premier League season with a negative points difference thanks to this issue as well, putting the former Swansea man in a precarious situation.
Meanwhile, Leicester City are still interested in signing Eddie Nketiah from Arsenal. They are in the race with Crystal Palace and Brentford for the English forward after losing Kelechi Iheanacho at the expiration of his contract.
The Foxes are also looking to sign Slovenian defender Dávid Hancko but will face a battle with Liverpool and Atlético de Madrid. Hancko is especially liked by Liverpool’s boss Arne Slot because they both worked together at Feyenoord Rotterdam in the Eredivisie last season.
Leicester has the upper hand in the signing of the Slovakian defender, however, because both Atléti and Liverpool have billed him as a substitute left-back for their squads. Under Potter or whoever may get the Leicester job, the Slovakian will walk straight into the starting lineup.
He will cost €35 million for any of the interested sides and they will have to wait until after Slovakia is done with the Euros to know the player’s decision.
