Gallagher delighted after Chelsea beat Newcastle to advance in Carabao Cup

Chelsea Captain for the night Conor Gallagher was delighted to see his side advance to the next stage of the carabao cup following an important win over Newcastle on Penalties.

Despite conceding early after Badiashile’s defensive error through the Magpies’ Callum Wilson, Chelsea held out and eventually took the chance when it arrived in stoppage time as Mykhailo Mudryk equalised.

Djordje Petrovic eventually became the hero during the penalty shootout with a huge save to win the game for the Blues. After the game, Conor Gallagher praised his team’s patience throughout the match and expressed his satisfaction at giving the devoted Stamford Bridge supporters a moment to relish.

Gallagher said: “I’m buzzing. That was a really good performance. We were battling hard to find a goal and thankfully it came right at the end through Misha’s goal and then we were confident we were going to win the penalty shoot-out.”

“I felt we deserved to win the game and obviously everyone is happy. We just had to keep going which we did.”

“We had a lot of the ball, a lot of possession and we just had to keep creating the chances which we did and eventually we got one in. It was really good for us to stay focused and keep going. It was frustrating at times but we got what we deserved in the end.”

“I loved the scenes at full-time. There haven’t been enough of those moments this season and last season, so hopefully there will be many more.”

Gallagher also acknowledged that he felt positive about going through on penalties after scoring such a late goal with the momentum clearly with the Blues.

“I think we felt confident”, he continued.

“We were playing well in the game and everyone was confident on the ball. We fought right until the end to get the goal and everyone was confident taking their penalties coming from that performance.”

The midfielder also recognized the significance of the win for the team’s morale, adding: “This will be great for the confidence. It’s definitely the best feeling we’ve had this season so everyone is really happy and excited to go into the next round. Of course, we are going to do everything we can to go through to the final now.”

Chelsea will now be looking to claim yet another win when they travel to take on Wolves in the Premier League at the weekend.
