First signing of the season done for Ruben Amorim

Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha for £62.5 million. The former Atlético de Madrid man will sign for five years with an option to extend for a sixth.

This has been the worst-kept secret in modern English football transfer history, as the news of the player’s potential move to Old Trafford had been making the rounds for a while. Recently, the player himself appeared to confirm that he would be going to Manchester United on social media. Those talks died down until now, when the media confirmed the fee that United would be paying to Wolves for his signature. The deal is also reported to be near completion, with the player’s participation in the international break the reason for the deal not being announced as completed.

Cunha is the first of what could likely be a summer of overhauls as Amorim looks to change the club totally. He has previously described his current squad as possibly the worst team in the club’s history and is known to be very enthusiastic about changing the team. However, the lack of European football for the team this season means that funds will be limited for him to change up the squad as he pleases.

United have also entered talks to sign 25-year-old French center back Oumar Solet from Serie A side Udinese. The 25-year-old spent four years in Austria with Red Bull Salzburg after making his debut for Olympique Lyon. Then he moved to Udinese in January 2025 and has proven to be one of the best signings of the January transfer window across all leagues. He has already risen to become their third most valuable player, and United will likely spend around £34 million to secure his signature.

Meanwhile, reports state that a decision has also been reached on Marcus Rashford, who had a promising loan stint at Aston Villa that was cut short by injury. The club is not considering any other option but a permanent sale, which means another loan is off the table. Barcelona is the club believed to be interested, but the Red Devils’ £40 million valuation of the player is a problem for them.

The report continues to state that the only time United would look at taking a loan is in the final days of the window. In that case, United could negotiate a paid loan with an option to purchase Rashford, possibly for £8 million and Rashford’s wages paid in full.
