Bayern Munich are in a panic to save face after having their latest £86 million take-it-or-leave-it offer for Harry Kane rejected by Tottenham Hotspur.
The Bavarians are a club who do not dally in the transfer market as they have built a culture of sealing most of their deals before the close of a window. Those that happen during a window happen quickly.
Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur have been their toughest opponents so far. The North London club have refused to budge on their £100 million valuation of England Three Lions captain Harry Kane. Bayern, on the other hand, do not want to pay that amount for the 30-year-old striker who has one season left on his running contract.
Having had bids in the £50 million to £60 million range turned down, they thought it best to offer a take-it-or-leave-it bid of £73 million. The payment will be accompanied by add-ons and other fees which will see the total they intend to pay for the Premier League’s active highest goalscorer sum up to £86 million.
Bayern also went ahead to issue a deadline to Spurs for the offer, asking them to make a decision on it by Sunday 6 August 2023.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy disregarded the deadline while sending a message through his staff to Bayern that his club were not going to accept it. The German Bundesliga giants, who seemed like they were going to pull out of the Kane chase – an outcome that Spurs would prefer – have reportedly contacted Levy and his team for another round of negotiations.
It is understood that Thomas Tuchel, Bayern’s manager, is bent on playing with Kane in his team next season. As a backup option to Kane, they have their eye on Juventus striker Dušan Vlahović who is also wanted by Tuchel’s former club, Chelsea. Bayern would rather spend on the Englishman, who is willing to join the club.
Kane has also let it be known that if a move is not finalised before the season begins, he will see out the remaining year of his Spurs contract. He has not mentioned anything about renewing which is what Spurs are hoping to get him to do with all their rejections of the offers that they have received for him.
The striker’s teammates are also hopeful that he will remain at the club as expressly stated by Dejan Kulusevski.
The Swedish attacker said after their latest pre-season outing in which Kane scored four goals said: “Of course we want Harry to stay – and we’ll do everything to make him stay.
“He scored four goals. He’s unbelievable. Honestly, his mentality – I can learn from him, like everybody. He just goes out and performs day in, day out. He’s a true professional. I’m happy I helped him score.
“It would benefit us to get it sorted. But you can only control what you can control. We players cannot do anything about it. We work our hardest, try to stay ready and the players that manage it, it’s up to them.”
Kulusevski also believes that Kane will thrive under new manager Ange Postecoglou and that that will convince the player to remain at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
