Cole Campbell completes move to Bundesliga newcomers Elversberg

American attacker Cole Campbell has left Borussia Dortmund to join newly promoted Bundesliga side Elversberg. The 20-year-old has signed a contract that will keep him at the club until June 2030, with the agreement officially announced by Elversberg on Thursday.

Sporting director Christian Weber praised the club’s newest signing, describing Campbell as a highly gifted player whose pace and ability in one-on-one situations will strengthen the squad. Weber also revealed that Elversberg had been tracking the forward for a considerable period and was pleased he chose to continue his career with them.

According to Kicker magazine, Elversberg will pay Borussia Dortmund a transfer fee of €6 million ($7 million) for the player.

Dortmund bid farewell

Dortmund sporting managing director Lars Ricken thanked Campbell for his contribution during his time with the club. He said the forward had developed into a professional footballer while at Dortmund and expressed his best wishes for Campbell’s future, both on and off the pitch.

Campbell joined Dortmund’s academy from Iceland in 2022 before progressing through the club’s system. During the second half of last season, he spent time on loan at Hoffenheim, where he made five Bundesliga appearances as a substitute.

Earlier in the campaign, the forward also came off the bench for Borussia Dortmund in their league match against Heidenheim.

The promotion side add promising talent

Although born in Houston, Campbell represented Iceland at the under-17 level before later switching to the United States youth national teams.

Elversberg secured their place in the Bundesliga after finishing second in Germany’s second division last season, earning promotion to the top flight for the first time in the club’s history. Campbell now becomes part of the squad preparing for that historic debut campaign.
