Wojciech Szczesny is set to leave Juventus for Bayern Munich because the Bavarians are plotting a move for him this summer.
The Poland international goalkeeper is seen as an option to provide competition for the ageing Manuel Neuer, who has also been sidelined for a year following an unfortunate ski accident while on holiday last winter. Yann Sommer has deputised brilliantly for the veteran German but he is now set to replace André Onana at Inter Milan after the Cameroonian moved to England to play for Manchester United.
Bayern want the former Arsenal goalkeeper to take Sommer’s place and challenge the 37-year-old for his place in the team when he returns.
Reports claim that Juventus are willing to sell 33-year-old Szczesny and the player, who is aware of Bayern Munich’s interest, is keen on the move. His international and big tournament experience places him at the top of the six-time UEFA Champions League winners’ list of Sommer replacements. However, he will probably be committing career suicide if he moves to the Allianz Arena with Neuer still active.
Reports claim that Bayern Munich do not see veteran goalkeeper Sven Ulreich and youngster Christian Fruchtl as starter material in comparison to Szczesny. Reports also suggest that the club are looking to promote backup goalkeeper 30-year-old Mattia Perin to the starting XI and getting rid of the former AS Roma man would help them do so.
Bayern, meanwhile, are reportedly growing in confidence in their bid to sign Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur.
Having already landed Kim Min-Jae from Napoli, Raphael Guerreiro from Borussia Dortmund, Konrad Laimer from RB Leipzig and are working on Wojciech Szczesny’s addition, the acquisition of Kane will wrap up a successful summer for the German champions.
Kane has gone the Kylian Mbappe way by stating that he will not sign a new contract at Spurs this summer, meaning he will leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for free. The Premier League side do not want to lose their best player for free so they could resort to selling him, which is where Bayern’s confidence comes from according to reports.
Sky Sports News reporter Dharmesh Sheth tries to explain Spurs’ mindset towards this deal. “As far as Tottenham are concerned, losing Harry Kane is the worst-case scenario,” he said.
“They don’t want that to happen, but the best case of that worst case scenario is that he moves abroad and they get £100 million.
“They don’t want to sell to a Premier League rival and hence why these talks are open with Bayern Munich. They don’t want a situation come September 1 when the window closes that Kane is still a Tottenham player and he hasn’t signed a new contract.
“That opens up the possibility that this time next year, he could sign for a Premier League rival on a free transfer.”
