Bayer Leverkusen’s search for a new coach continues

Bayer Leverkusen are once again on the lookout for a manager after parting ways with Erik ten Hag. The Dutch coach, who previously worked at Manchester United, lasted fewer than three months at the German side and oversaw only three competitive matches before the decision was made to move on.

The club had already been assessing alternatives for the past week, with management left unconvinced by his start.

Xavi declines another approach

According to Spanish outlet MARCA, Leverkusen reached out to Xavi Hernández to discuss the possibility of him taking charge. The former Barcelona coach turned down the invitation, making it clear he does not yet feel ready to return to management.

This is not the first time Leverkusen have tried to lure him. Earlier in the summer, after Xabi Alonso departed for Real Madrid, Xavi was also considered alongside Como boss Cesc Fàbregas. His decision to step back from the role then pushed Leverkusen toward hiring Ten Hag.

Rebuilding in difficult circumstances

The club’s interest in Xavi was logical given his background at Barcelona, where he helped guide a team in transition after Lionel Messi’s exit. He promoted several academy prospects such as Gavi, Alejandro Balde, Marc Casadó, Fermín López, Pau Cubarsí and Lamine Yamal, while also delivering the La Liga crown in 2022–23.

Despite that success, his tenure ended without silverware the following year, and he has chosen to remain patient regarding his next role.

Leverkusen themselves are in the middle of a major reshaping project. Just two years on from an unbeaten title-winning campaign, they have seen key figures including Florian Wirtz, Granit Xhaka, Jeremie Frimpong, Jonathan Tah and Piero Hincapié depart this summer. With their Champions League campaign due to begin in under three weeks, the need to appoint a new leader during the international break is urgent.
