Barcelona reshuffle goalkeeper position with Garcia signing

Barcelona have officially completed the signing of Joan Garcia from city rivals Espanyol, activating his €25 million release clause. The 24-year-old goalkeeper arrives following an outstanding campaign and is expected to be the club’s new starter in goal next season. According to reports, Garcia was assured of this role as part of the agreement to join the Catalan giants.

This decision is likely to stir unrest in the dressing room, particularly for Marc-André ter Stegen, who has held the starting position for nearly ten years. The veteran shot-stopper, currently captain, was not consulted prior to Garcia’s arrival and is said to be unhappy with the situation. Club sources reportedly indicated there was no obligation to involve him in the transfer decision, drawing comparisons to how forwards aren’t asked about incoming attackers.

Ter Stegen’s uncertain future

Barcelona are now open to parting ways with ter Stegen, despite his own wish to stay and fight for the position. The club could benefit financially from removing his salary from the books, especially given their ongoing budget constraints. Although there is no official push to force him out, the message is clear: his role is no longer guaranteed.

It will be up to new head coach Hansi Flick to clarify the German international’s status at the club. A candid conversation is expected between the two in the coming weeks, which may determine whether ter Stegen continues at Camp Nou or considers a departure.

Goalkeeper hierarchy set to shift

Should ter Stegen exit, Wojciech Szczesny is the likely candidate to take over as the backup. Though he reportedly agreed to a two-year contract with Barcelona, no final signature has been made. Inaki Peña, currently part of the squad, is expected to leave in the near future.

Below the senior ranks, young keeper Ander Astralaga is anticipated to extend his stay, with plans to go out on loan for more playing time. His position with the reserve team, Barca Atletic, is expected to be filled by Aron Yaakobishvili, who will take over as their starting goalkeeper.
