Atlético Madrid renew interest in Cristian Romero

Atlético Madrid are preparing a new attempt to secure the services of Cristian Romero. The Spanish club is pushing ahead with its efforts to land the Argentine defender, who currently plays for Tottenham Hotspur. According to journalist Fernando Czyz, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has presented the player with a fresh and financially attractive contract proposal in an effort to keep him in north London.

Despite the improved offer, Romero appears inclined to turn it down. The reason behind his potential decision is reportedly unrelated to financial compensation. He is believed to be motivated by professional goals and career progression rather than monetary gain. Romero is said to have told Levy directly, “It’s not a question of money, but of professional challenges. I love Tottenham and they will always be in my heart.”

Transfer talks and valuation gap

The Spanish side is ready to invest heavily in the defender, having reportedly tabled a bid in the region of €55 million, with an additional €10 million in bonuses. Furthermore, Atlético Madrid are open to increasing the bonus component by another €5 million if required, highlighting their strong interest in the player.

However, there appears to be a significant difference in how both clubs assess Romero’s worth. Journalist Ruben Uria reports that Tottenham have set the asking price at €82 million (equivalent to £70 million or $96 million), a figure that exceeds Atlético’s current proposal.

Simeone’s desire and Levy’s decision

Atlético manager Diego Simeone is reportedly convinced of Romero’s quality and is eager to bring his fellow Argentine to the Spanish capital before the transfer window closes. With the defender’s personal inclination leaning toward a new challenge, the situation now hinges on Levy’s final judgment—whether to accept the Spanish club’s offer or hold out for the full valuation.

The coming weeks could prove decisive in determining where Romero will play next season, as Tottenham weigh the balance between financial terms and retaining one of their key players.
