Atletico Madrid have shown interest in signing Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher this summer, according to talkSPORT.
The English midfielder has entered the final year of his contract and so far Chelsea has not tabled another offer for a new deal.
With his future now in doubt, Conor Gallagher have been linked with a move away from the bridge.
Still, Gallagher is reportedly at ease with his future.
Atletico are in a frantic attempt to bolster their roster – Having already lost five players this summer – four on free transfers. They are now looking to bolster their squad.
Gallagher is an academy player, hence Chelsea’s compliance with PSR regulations would be greatly enhanced by his transfer as a “pure profit” transaction.
Gallagher continues to attract interest from Atletico Madrid
Nevertheless, the 24-year-old has been an important member at Stamford Bridge and served as the team’s de facto captain the previous season due to the absence of first-choice captain Reece James and second-choice captain Ben Chilwell for a large chunk of the schedule.
That was during the tenure of Mauricio Pochettino, though, and since Gallagher is presently playing for England at Euro 2024, new coach Enzo Maresca has not had a chance to examine him closely.
The Englishman has been linked to Tottenham and Aston Villa, however it’s possible that they’ve already signed players in his position.
Tottenham signed Archie Gray for £40 million just last week, while Aston villa added former Blue Ross Barkley from Luton Town as well.
Gallagher has become a fan favourite at Chelsea from his performance in the recently concluded season and club legend Joe Cole reiterated that he mustn’t be moved on at all cost.
The former England international told talkSPORT last month: “Gallagher can’t leave. I know there are issues financially but Conor Gallagher has been brilliant, from start to finish.”
“Everyone has turned up in the last few weeks but Conor, you see a great player when he is playing in a struggling team. Conor was still there, captain as well.”
“I think it is imperative that the club keeps him.”
The midfielder was also one of the names that didn’t go out through injuries. He missed only one match in the Premier League due to suspension and scored seven goals with nine assists in all competitions.
It would be interesting to see how the transfer window unfolds and more specifically, where Conor Gallagher will be playing football next season.
