Ange Postecoglu hits out at Bayern pursuit of Harry Kane as Premier League season draws near

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglu has called out German Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich for the way and manner of their pursuit of Harry Kane.

The 30-year-old has one year left on his Spurs contract and the Australian manager is on the verge of making his official debut as the club’s manager without the talismanic striker.

Kane and Bayern have been in contact over a move and reports indicate that only Daniel Levy, Chairman of Tottenham Hotspur, stands in the way.

Bayern’s most recent bid is reportedly £86 million, which is closer to their asking price for Kane. They have also given Spurs and Levy an ultimatum to decide to accept or refuse the bid.

German and Bayern media have since made it a point to bring up Kane everywhere Spurs have been in their pre-season journey. The latest incident happened at the post-match press conference following the North London club’s 5-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk.

Kane scored four of the five goals and had a lap of honour to thank the travelling Spurs’ support. The move was mistaken to be a farewell from the England Three Lions captain because Spurs’ 2023/24 Premier League season begins this weekend.

When posed the question of Kane’s future after the match, Postecoglu insisted that he will be managing Kane for the 2023/24 season while chiding Bayern Munich and the journalists for the way they have handled the situation.

“There’s no doubt I’d use Harry,” Postecoglou began. “He’s a fantastic striker, one of the world’s best. The way the team plays will help him. He loves scoring goals, we created a load of chances today and he was the beneficiary.”

“There’s one deadline and that’s the end of the transfer window,” Postecoglu added about the ultimatum given to Tottenham by Bayern to decide on the 30-year-old’s future. “Beyond that, I’m in open dialogue with Harry and the club on a regular basis.

“I’ve told them if the status quo changes, inform me. I don’t need to know the comings and goings in between. I just want to deal with what’s in front of me because, irrespective of the outcome of that, I’m building a team here.

“I can’t wait around for a decision either way to get going. We don’t have the time or the luxury to do that. I’m working with what’s in front of me. You saw today that Harry certainly is invested in what we’re doing and we’ll keep on doing that unless something changes.”

“What is factual right now is that he is a contracted player of our football club,”  added Postecoglou. ‘I certainly wouldn’t talk about contracted players at other football clubs but I’m not at Bayern, so they can go the way they want.”
