United also dilly-dallied over signing Dutch sensation Cody Gakpo until Liverpool beat them to the punch. The Red Devils have received criticism for their approach in the transfer market.

Man United target Randal Kolo Muani as Atletico seek a buyer for Joao Felix

Man United saw Felix as a short-term solution to their attacking problems after his disagreements with Diego Simeone. The situation with the Portugal international saw the club willing to sanction a loan deal.

Atletico wanted a €15 million (£13.3m) loan fee, while Felix’s wages until the end of the season would cost a further €6m (£5.3m). Another sticking point was Jorge Mendes, who would want a payment too.

The Old Trafford side saw it as too pricey and baulked at the demands. According to The Telegraph, Manchester United have walked away from the deal. It would take an act of God for United to return to the negotiating table. It means Atletico, Joao Felix and Jorge Mendes would need to relax some of their demands.

United have turned its attention to Kolo Muani. According to the French newspaper L’Equipe, the Frankfurt frontman is now on the radar of the Old Trafford side.
