Andrews named new Brentford head coach after Frank exit

Keith Andrews has been confirmed as Brentford’s new head coach on a three-year agreement. The 44-year-old steps into the role following Thomas Frank’s departure to join Tottenham.

Andrews had been with the club since last summer, working as a specialist in set-piece strategies under Frank. Before his time at Brentford, the former Republic of Ireland international was involved in coaching roles at MK Dons, Sheffield United, and with his national team. This marks his first time leading a senior team.

Brentford looked at several other options before making their final choice. Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna and Francesco Farioli, who recently left Ajax, were both among the names under consideration. Ultimately, owner Matthew Benham opted for internal promotion, following a pattern seen previously when Frank was elevated after Dean Smith’s move to Aston Villa in 2018.

A club facing change on and off the pitch

Andrews takes charge at a time of significant transition for the west London side. There have been notable movements in the transfer market, with key departures and new arrivals reshaping the squad.

Republic of Ireland international Caoimhin Kelleher has been brought in from Liverpool to fill the void left by Dutch goalkeeper Mark Flekken, who signed for Bayer Leverkusen. Meanwhile, Denmark’s Christian Norgaard is expected to join Arsenal in the coming weeks.

Forward Bryan Mbeumo, who finished last season as the team’s top scorer, has attracted serious interest as well. Manchester United have reportedly returned with an improved £60 million offer for the Cameroon international.

Internal promotion continues club tradition

Brentford’s decision to elevate Andrews mirrors a familiar pattern within the club’s management approach. Frank himself had been promoted internally, having previously assisted Dean Smith before assuming the main role.

While some may see Benham’s move as a risk, appointing someone already embedded in the club’s system allows for continuity during a turbulent period. With several players on the move and pressure to maintain competitive performances, Andrews will be tasked with steadying the ship while establishing his own leadership style.
