Chelsea have opened negotiations to sign Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson and Brighton striker Danny Welbeck as the club looks to add experience to its squad ahead of the new season.
The move reflects a change in Chelsea’s transfer approach after the club acknowledged that its policy of focusing on younger players requires adjustments. The Blues are now targeting proven Premier League experience alongside emerging talent.

Chelsea are in discussions over a deal for Henderson, who has one year remaining on his Brentford contract. Brentford are willing to allow the 36-year-old England midfielder to leave on a free transfer.
The Blues are also optimistic about completing a move for 35-year-old striker Danny Welbeck, who is keen on joining Stamford Bridge.
Brighton has declined to comment on the situation. Welbeck signed a one-year contract extension in March, with his current deal running until the end of the 2026-27 season.
Chelsea’s transfer strategy shifts toward experience
Chelsea’s pursuit of Henderson and Welbeck follows comments made by influential owner Behdad Eghbali in April, when he acknowledged the club’s model of signing young players needed a “tweak.”
The club had also attempted to sign 33-year-old Granit Xhaka from Sunderland, but the Black Cats refused to sell the Switzerland captain.
Although Chelsea recently completed the club-record signing of Morgan Rogers, the 23-year-old also brings extensive Premier League experience, while the Blues are closing in on a move for centre-back Maxence Lacroix.
Chelsea’s attacking options face uncertain future
Welbeck’s potential arrival would further increase competition in Chelsea’s attack, where Joao Pedro is regarded as the club’s first-choice forward.
Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Marc Guiu, and Nicolas Jackson are also under contract, although several futures remain uncertain. Guiu is available for either a permanent transfer or a loan, with Chelsea valuing him at around £25 million.
Jackson, who has returned from a loan spell at Bayern Munich, is open to leaving despite previously being expected to stay, while Delap is increasingly likely to depart after hoping to establish himself under Xabi Alonso. Emegha, meanwhile, is expected to remain after only recently joining from Strasbourg.
Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson bring proven quality
Welbeck enjoyed the most productive league season of his career last term, scoring 13 goals in 37 Premier League appearances for Brighton. Since joining from Watford in 2020, he has scored 51 goals in 201 matches for the club.
Henderson made 34 appearances in all competitions for Brentford after arriving from Ajax and also featured once as a substitute for England at the World Cup before suffering a broken arm during the tournament.
