Eddie Howe has highlighted the danger posed by Hugo Ekitike as Newcastle prepare to meet the reigning Premier League champions.
The French forward was once expected to make his way to Tyneside, with Newcastle strongly linked to him up until last July. He was seen as a potential partner for Alexander Isak in attack, a move that might have reshaped Howe’s frontline.
Liverpool, however, intervened and secured his signature, ending Newcastle’s pursuit. Ironically, Ekitike now lines up for the very side Newcastle will meet on matchday two. At the same time, uncertainty surrounds Isak’s own future, with the striker pushing for a departure and reportedly holding out for a transfer. Newcastle, though, remain firm, demanding more than £130 million to sanction his exit.
Howe on Ekitikie’s qualities
Ahead of the clash, Howe admitted that he has long admired the 22-year-old forward. Speaking to the press, he praised Ekitike’s attributes while making clear that Newcastle’s task will be to limit his influence.
“There’s no doubt I’ve liked Hugo for a number of years,” Howe said. “He showed his qualities in his Premier League debut against Bournemouth. He’s clever, moves well, strong in the air, and can finish with both feet. He scores goals, and we need to make sure he doesn’t have that impact against us.”
Transfer frustrations and new arrivals
The Newcastle boss also spoke candidly about his frustrations with the current transfer window. Having missed out on several targets—including Ekitike and Benjamin Šeško—Howe admitted he is eager for the window to close.
“I’ll be glad when the deadline arrives,” he explained. “In every window there are highs and lows, and this one has had its share of disappointments but also positives. The players we have brought in give us quality, athleticism, and new energy. That’s important for us going forward.”
So far, Newcastle have secured Anthony Elanga, Aaron Ramsdale, Malick Thiaw and Jacob Ramsey. Despite setbacks, Howe remains confident that his squad has enough strength to compete and improve on last season’s finish.
