Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has yet to finalize his decision on who will start in goal against West Ham on Monday. While Robert Sanchez has been his preferred choice this season, his recent errors have raised questions about a potential change.
Sanchez under scrutiny
The Spanish goalkeeper has been Maresca’s go-to option, but his performances have come under the spotlight. With five mistakes leading to goals in the Premier League this season – joint-highest in the division – his position is being closely evaluated. Despite defending Sanchez in the past, Maresca hinted at reconsidering his selection, with backup keeper Filip Jorgensen available as an alternative.
When asked if he had made his choice, Maresca remained noncommittal. “Not yet,” he said, noting that he still had time before making a final call. However, he expressed confidence in both options, stating that whenever Jorgensen has been called upon, he has performed well.
Jorgensen’s opportunity?
The Danish shot-stopper has only featured twice in the league this season but could be in line for another start. Maresca acknowledged Jorgensen’s capabilities but reiterated that Sanchez had been established as first choice from the outset.
“I told Filip from the beginning that Robert was number one,” he explained. “That doesn’t mean mistakes go unnoticed or that decisions can’t change.” While the coach acknowledged Sanchez’s errors, he suggested that both goalkeepers remain in contention.
Final decision still pending
With a crucial fixture against West Ham approaching – where former Chelsea boss Graham Potter will return to Stamford Bridge with the Hammers – Maresca must decide whether to stick with Sanchez or give Jorgensen a chance.
“We still have two or three days,” Maresca said. “Either choice will be fine.” His decision on Monday could prove pivotal in Chelsea’s push for consistency as they look to improve their standing in the league.
