Thomas Tuchel appointed as England manager

Thomas Tuchel has been appointed as the new England manager, following successful negotiations between the Football Association (FA) and his representatives.

The decision comes after Gareth Southgate resigned from his role as England coach following the Euro 2024 final loss, where the Three Lions were defeated 2-1 by Spain.

Lee Carsley, who served as interim manager since Southgate’s departure, will now make way for Tuchel, who is seen as the long-term solution England needs.

The FA initially considered Pep Guardiola for the position, and when asked about the possibility of becoming the new head coach of England the Manchester City manager did not dismiss claims, saying:

Guardiola dismissed England rumours

“Leaving City? It’s not true, I haven’t decided yet. And it is not even true that I will be the next England coach. If I had decided, I would say it … I don’t know either, anything can happen.”

However, with Guardiola not in the picture, the FA’s technical director John McDermott led the search for a manager with a proven record of success. Tuchel, who secured league titles with Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain and won the Champions League with Chelsea, emerged as the top choice.

The appointment makes Tuchel the third non-English manager of the Three Lions, following in the footsteps of Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

The 51-year-old German coach is poised to bring his wealth of experience and tactical acumen to the England national team.

Lee Carsley, speaking after England’s 3-1 victory over Finland on Sunday, admitted saying:

“World-class coach who has won trophies” should be appointed.

“People are always going to have their preferences,” he told ITV. “I’m in the middle. My bosses have made it clear what they need from me. This job deserves a world-class coach who has won trophies, and I am still on the path to that.”

Tuchel’s appointment is expected to bring a fresh perspective and renewed vigor to the England squad as they prepare for upcoming international competitions. Fans and players alike will be eager to see how Tuchel’s strategies and leadership can elevate the team’s performance on the world stage.
