Varane’s Possible Return: Real Madrid’s Defensive Moves

Real Madrid finds itself in a challenging defensive situation, grappling with injuries to key players Eder Militao and David Alaba, both sidelined with anterior cruciate ligament injuries. With Militao expected to be out until at least February and Alaba ruled out for the rest of the season, Antonio Rudiger and Nacho Fernandez are the only fit central defenders at the club. This defensive crisis has prompted Real Madrid to actively explore options in the January transfer market, a departure from their recent transfer strategy.

Initially hesitant, Real Madrid seems to be warming up to the idea of reinforcing their defensive line, especially with the persistent push from manager Carlo Ancelotti. The search for suitable reinforcements is underway, as reported by Diario AS, although the club is not under immediate pressure to secure signings and maintains confidence in its current defensive choices.

Raphael Varane Emerges as a Potential Solution

Among the options under consideration is Manchester United’s Raphael Varane, who left Real Madrid for Old Trafford in a €40 million move. Varane, since his transfer, has struggled to find his footing in the Premier League, missing 38 games over two-and-a-half years. Despite Real Madrid not yet conducting a full evaluation, Ancelotti is reportedly keen on bringing Varane back to the club. The French World Cup-winner boasts a decade-long tenure with Real Madrid, offering a wealth of experience and a proven track record at the highest level.

Varane’s contractual situation may play in Real Madrid’s favor. With his current deal set to expire in 2024 and Manchester United reportedly open to parting ways with the player, the possibility of securing Varane for a nominal fee or even on a free transfer arises. However, the stumbling block in negotiations is likely to be the player’s wages, having seen a significant increase from €8 million to €14 million since joining Manchester United.

While a January signing was initially contemplated, the potential solution could come in the form of a loan deal, aligning with Real Madrid’s recent transfer policy. The club has been cautious about signing players in the latter stages of their careers and typically limits deals for players over 30 to a one-year duration. Varane, as a short-term option with proven quality, presents a viable choice for Real Madrid, provided an agreement on wages can be reached, unless the club opts for a more substantial and long-term investment in their defensive lineup.
