Yoanne Wissa out for months in big blow to Brentford

Brentford have lost forward Yoane Wissa to injury and will be without the DR Congo international’s talents for “a couple of months”.

The player featured in their 2 – 1 defeat to Manchester City in week 5 of the 2024/25 Premier League season where he scored the opening goal in the match in the first minute.

He was subbed off at halftime as a precaution and tests revealed that he had picked a knock in the first half which turned out to be an ankle injury.

A statement released on the club’s official website reads: “Brentford head coach Thomas Frank has confirmed that forward Yoane Wissa will be out for a “couple of months” after picking up an ankle injury against Manchester City.

“Wissa limped off in the first half at Etihad Stadium after a challenge by midfielder Mateo Kovačić and will now be unavailable until November.”

What has been said

Brentford head coach, Frank, who received high praise from Pep Guardiola after the game, expressed sadness over the incident. Wissa’s injury marks a second key injury suffered in his squad’s attacking department following the injury to new signings Igor Thiago in pre-season.

Frank said: “Wissa is, unfortunately, not good news: it looks like an injury that will be a couple of months.

“It’s very frustrating. We talked about our many injuries last year, I hope I don’t have to talk too much about it this year, I maybe already have.

“We were unlucky with Igor [Thiago], unlucky with [Aaron] Hickey; we’ve then had two contact injuries with Mathias Jensen and Yoane Wissa, so that’s very frustrating.

“But that’s part of football, we move on, and we will find solutions.”

Then he added: “It will leave a big hole. Everybody was saying we bought Igor Thiago to replace Ivan [Toney] – but we still had Wissa; we bought Igor Thiago to build the squad and provide competition in the squad.

“Wissa had a very good season last year and I thought he has started the season very well this year, with three goals in four games, that’s a very good number.

“He’s just been very important for us and that’s going to leave a hole. But, again, I will find a solution.”

What next for Brentford?

Brentford are next in a room against Leyton Orient in the EFL (Carabao) Cup in midweek before they face Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League next weekend.

Their opponents picked up their first win of the season in their last league match while Brentford lost. They will be more confident hosting the Bees, who are going to be worried about replacing their key man.
