Xhaka closing in on Stadium of Light switch

Granit Xhaka is poised to join Sunderland from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth an initial £13 million, with a further £4 million potentially payable in bonuses. The veteran midfielder, aged 32, is preparing to undergo a medical and is expected to commit to a contract lasting three years with the newly promoted Premier League side.

The Swiss international previously featured for Arsenal between 2016 and 2023. During his time in north London, he made nearly 300 appearances, lifted two FA Cups, and briefly served as captain before departing for the Bundesliga.

Premier League return after German success

Xhaka moved to Leverkusen in 2023 and played a key role over two seasons, including the club’s historic league title win in 2024 – their first in the German top flight. His return to England brings experience and leadership to a Sunderland side aiming to consolidate their top-flight status after promotion.

His move marks a significant addition to the squad, both in terms of pedigree and leadership. Sunderland have been active in the market and continue to reinforce key areas ahead of the new campaign.

Sunderland’s busy transfer window continues

This summer’s transfer activity has seen Sunderland commit around £114 million on new players, with roughly £37 million raised through outgoing transfers, including the sales of Jobe Bellingham and Tommy Watson. Their net spend places them just behind the Premier League’s established elite in terms of investment.

Xhaka becomes the eighth addition to the squad this window, joining Enzo Le Fée, Habib Diarra, Noah Sadiki, Reinildo Mandava, Chemsdine Talbi, and Simon Adingra as part of an ambitious rebuild under the club’s current leadership.
