Liverpool closed an extraordinary summer of signings by finalizing a headline move for Alexander Isak on deadline day. The Swedish forward joined from Newcastle United for a Premier League record of £125 million, bringing the club’s total expenditure in the window to £446.5 million.
The transfer ended weeks of speculation, with the striker pushing to make the switch to Anfield regardless of obstacles. His arrival strengthens an attack already full of talent, while also making Liverpool the biggest spenders in a single Premier League window.
Fitness concerns and International duty
Fans eager to see the new arrival in red may need patience. The international break has postponed his debut until at least Sunday, September 14, when Liverpool visits newly-promoted Burnley.
However, the situation is complicated by the fact that Isak has not played since Newcastle’s final league fixture in May. He skipped preseason training with his former side in pursuit of the transfer, leaving him short of sharpness.
Manager Arne Slot is expected to ease the forward in rather than risk throwing him straight into action. Hugo Ekitiké, who has already impressed with two goals and an assist in his first three matches, is likely to start at Turf Moor.
Isak is currently with Sweden for World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia and Kosovo. Head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson confirmed his minutes will be carefully managed, stressing that the striker cannot yet complete a full match but remains in high spirits.
Possible debut dates
A cameo against Burnley is possible, but if that opportunity passes, there will be several chances for his introduction later in September. Liverpool faces Atlético Madrid at Anfield in the Champions League on September 17 before hosting Everton in the Merseyside derby the following weekend.
Further fixtures against Southampton in the Carabao Cup, Crystal Palace in the league, and Galatasaray in Europe provide more openings for the record signing to make his first competitive outing.
