“We will fight to the end for the badge,” Mauricio Pochettino promises Chelsea fans

New Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has promised the club’s fans that he and his team will fight to take Chelsea back to the top.

The Argentine manager has hit the ground running at Chelsea with an interview that broke the internet on Sunday. In the interview, he mentioned that Chelsea is a big club and has been one of the leading Premier League clubs in the past decade.

Football lovers took to social media to chide and deride the former Tottenham Hotspur manager for his comments, citing Manchester City and Liverpool’s dominance as arguments against his comments. Whether or not those statements appealed to Chelsea fans is another thing entirely. However, his most recent comments to fight for the club’s honour are sure to get them amped up for the new season, which has already started in earnest for the 51-year-old tactician and his coaching staff.

Pochettino has already signed off on a few transfer decisions which have seen Chelsea move and acquire players at breakneck speed in the past few weeks. The Blues have welcomed three new signings and nine players back from loan spells all across Europe. They have also moved on six first-team players from their 2022/23 squad, sent two loanees back to their clubs and released two players. All decisions have been made by Pochettino and his staff, who officially resumed duty as Chelsea manager on 1 July 2023.

Speaking to the club’s website about how he intends to win over the fans, he said: “It’s going to be exciting but while it’s close, it’s also still far away. First, we need to meet the players, start work, then the tour in America, which is going to be unbelievable to meet all the fans.

“We will be ready for the first game against Liverpool – and it is going to be so exciting to have the first Premier League game at Stamford Bridge.

“We will face a team that’s very good in Liverpool, I know very well from the past. Now it’s important to visualise ourselves at Stamford Bridge. We know very well the stadium and we know with the fans we will create a good atmosphere.”

He continued, “We need to be [a] team that shows togetherness, cares about the club, cares about the fans, and that fights until the end for the badge. That’s the most important thing. The fans need to feel that all the players involved in the game are going to die for the club. That is the most important thing to create this good feeling and for sure feel proud of each other.”

Pochettino will meet his new team in the coming days as the club is slated to begin pre-season this week.
