“We were meant to win the game”, Maguire says after UEFA Champions League victory over FC Copenhagen at Old Trafford

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire stated that their victory over Danish club FC Copenhagen in their matchday 3 UEFA Champions League clash was meant to be.

Former Red Devils captain Maguire scored the lone goal that helped the two-time Champions League winners claim their first win in the ongoing competition. He has been a mainstay in the starting XI in the last few weeks after losing his place to Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez. Injuries to both players helped his case but he has built up his confidence and won back Erik ten Hag’s trust, making him difficult to drop to the bench.

He capped a fine defensive performance with a headed goal in the 72nd minute of the game which proved to be the winner of the tie. It was a match where United struggled and were on the verge of not picking up any points for the third straight Champions League match, a first in their history.

That unfortunate history was not to be and the fans at the Theatre of Dreams appreciated the England Three Lions defender for preventing it from happening.

His efforts could have been a waste if not for another heavily criticised player, André Onana. The Cameroon international saved a penalty in the 97th minute of the game after Scottish midfielder Scott McTominay gave away a penalty to the visitors. Onana’s save was the last action of the match and was even celebrated more than Maguire’s goal.

Both players were lauded by the fans and the journalists, who asked Maguire to share his thoughts on the match.

“Incredible. We have got to be more clinical, we had numerous counter-attacks and we didn’t give them a chance in the second-half. The first-half was really poor, it was not perfect but an important win. This man [Andre Onana] stepped up and it was a massive save.”

“Definitely, it was meant to be. We were meant to win the game, a magnificent save and a win dedicated to Sir Bobby [Man United legend who passed away recently] and his family. It has been a tough week for us away at Sheffield United and losing someone like Sir Bobby, it affects the cub and the dressing room. But really pleased we could get the win tonight.”

Asked about the reception he got from the fans following his goal and all his heroic efforts for the club in the last few weeks, he said, “It is amazing. When you are not on your game it gets picked up, but I am really proud and pleased how I have acted over this six to 12 months.”

“I have been given an opportunity and I want to help the team and get the club back to where it should be.”
